County Development Board - Present Position: |

Chairman
Mr. Ted Fitzgerald MCC, Kerry County Development Board |
Last month we
issued the first in a series of Kerry County Development Board newsletters
which are designed to keep you informed of activities at Board level.
Remember, the County Development Board draws its membership from
four sectors, Local Government, Local Development, State Agencies
and Social Partners. Our aim is to develop a county-wide Strategy
for Economic, Social and Cultural Development by January, 2002.
This will represent a charter for greater local level co-ordination
between the four sectors which will shape the future of our county
over the next ten years.
The Board was launched on 18 February, 2000, and the second meeting
of the Board was held in the Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney, on 14
April, 2000. It was chaired by Councillor Ted Fitzgerald and facilitated
by Dr. Jim Fitzpatrick, Fitzpatrick Associates, Ms. Siobhán
Griffin, Kerry County Council, and Mr. Joe MacGrath, Director
of Service, Community & Enterprise. The meeting consisted
of both plenary sessions and working groups. The working groups
sessions were chaired by Mr. Martin Nolan, County Manager, Mr.
Paddy Gallagher, Area Director, IDA, and Mr. Paddy O'Callaghan,
Chairman, South Kerry Development Partnership Ltd. Rapporteurs
for the Working groups were Ms. Helen Fitzgerald, Community and
Voluntary Sector, Mr. Martin Collins, CEO, Kerry County Enterprise
Board, and Ms. Kathleen O'Regan Sheppard, Business/Employers Pillar.
The groups considered the "Key Issues" which must be
addressed in the strategy and the establishment of working groups
to take forward the work of the Board to the next stages.

A COUNTY KERRY STRATEGY FOR ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT
One
Stop Shop Developments - A Practical Example of Local Level Co-ordination
Work is progressing
on the development of eight Area Services Centres in County Kerry.
The services referred to include those provided by the Local Authorities,
State Agencies/ Government Departments and the Community/Voluntary
Sector. The challenge is to develop an integrated, person focused
approach to the delivery of services. To this end widespread consultation
is taking place. A pilot project is in place in Killarney since
June, 1999. The learning from this is valuable in the planning
and development of the other centres.
