Review
of the first year of operation of the Kerry County Development
Board.
Objective
of the Board: To develop a County Kerry Strategy for Economic,
Social and Cultural Development
Hello and a Happy New Year. This is the fifth edition of our newsletter
which we hope has kept you adequately informed of Kerry County
Development Board activities to date.
1.
What happened in 2000
Since February,
2000, the following progress has been made:
1.
After
wide ranging consultation, the Kerry County Development Board
is up and running, with representatives from the Local Government
Sector, Local Development Sector, State Sector and Social
Partners. It held six meetings in 2000.
2.
Four Work Groups of the Board were established to focus the
progression and development of key strategic issues.
3.
Sub
Groups of the four Work Groups have been formed to deal with
specific issues.
4.
An
Audit of Service Provision for County Kerry was commenced
in order to identify and address all relevant service provision
and to establish a picture of the total extent of services
provided by all sectors.
5.
The
Board, in association with NUI Galway, published a Kerry County
Atlas which is available for reference purposes in all public
libraries and on our website at www.kerrycdb.ie.
2.
Kerry County Community and Voluntary
Forum 2000
1.
The
Kerry County Community and Voluntary Forum was established
and held six meetings in 2000.
2.
The
Forum agreed its nominations to:
(a) Kerry County Council's Strategic Policy Committees
(b) Kerry County Development Board
3.
The
Forum, on behalf of registered Community and Voluntary groups,
made their submission on key issues affecting community groups
in Kerry to the Kerry County Development Board.
4.
The Kerry County Community and Voluntary Forum revisited nine
countywide locations through a series of consultative meetings
in November and December, 2000.
5.
The
issues raised at these meetings have been summarised in a
newsletter circulated to all registered Community and Voluntary
groups in December, 2000.
3.
Meeting held on 10 November, 2000
The last meeting of the Board for the year 2000 was held on 10 November,
2000, in the Abbeygate Hotel, Tralee. 22 members attended.
The Board considered and agreed the following:
1.
A
report from the Chairman and Director on the National Convention
on County Development Boards.
2.
Reports
from the four Work Group Chairs.
3.
Presentation made by Dr. Síle O'Connor, Director, National
Economic & Social Council, on the National Context for
County Development Board Strategies.
4.
The Kerry County Development Board agreed its work plan and
meeting dates for 2001.
4.
National Convention on County Development Boards
The convention
which took place on 1 November, 2000, was opened by An Taoiseach,
Mr. Bertie Ahern, T.D.
Three clear
messages were identified from the convention:
1.
The
CDB process has the full backing and support of Government.
2.
The
need to look at specific projects and endeavour to make a
success of these.
3.
The
co-ordination process should begin now and not wait until
the strategy is developed.
5.
National Context for CDB Strategies
Dr. Síle
O'Connor made a presentation to the KCDB meeting in November which
addressed the following issues:
